HISTORY

Cascade Lodge was founded by Captain Ernest Ditlew Knuth and his wife Paula in 1939. As a little boy, Ernest didn't like his tutor, so he ran away from home. He became a cabin boy on a sailing vessel. He won the admiration of the captain of the ship, who sent him to the Danish National Academy. He became a captain on sailing vessel at a very young age. Later in life, he achieved his captain's license in the U.S. Merchant Marines.

In 1926, in the port of Brooklyn, New York, he met a German immigrant named Paula Uhl, whom he married. His seafaring days over, together the newlyweds began a restaurant in Brooklyn. Yearning for the country life, he searched for many years for a farm. In 1936, the found one, a pre-Revolutionary War farmhouse among the rolling hills of Bucks County. Because of the many cascading springs, they named it Cascade Lodge. The Cascade Lodge became a favorite retreat for celebrities and families from Philadelphia and New York City.

In the 1960s after many additions to the main house, the Cascade Lodge Restaurant became one of the finest elegant dining places of Bucks County. The Restaurant is still owned and operated by the Knuth family heirs, Howard and Sandra Knuth.
